Cave Painting

Matthew Plummer-Fernández

The Cave Painting series is produced by a custom neural network system that generates imaginary caves in response to text and image prompts chosen by the artist. Each artwork in the series is not necessarily a representational depiction of a cave, but is an experiment in using AI to mix up various tropes resulting in a series of images that induce pareidolia in the viewer –  that is to say we see the caves as containing figurative depictions of objects, people and faces in their walls and tunnels. These features can also be appreciated as traces of actual human activity, as the AI's computer vision component has been trained on large datasets of images found online.
